On the morning of June 24, the National Science and Technology Conference, the National Science and Technology Award Conference, and the General Assemblies of the Members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) convened in Beijing, where the recipients of the State Science and Technology Award in 2023 were announced. A project entitled “Establishment and Application of Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution Identification System”, in which ZCMU participated as the third main contributor received the Second Prize of the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2023. Professor Zhu Aisong, Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences, was the fourth principal contributor to this project.

The project systematically constructed a theoretical framework for Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution Identification, and established a new second-level discipline of “Traditional Chinese Medicine Constitution” set by the Ministry of Education, which has been incorporated into the book called History of Traditional Chinese Medicine Disciplines. This framework provides theoretical guidance for the prevention and control of diseases and chronic conditions in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The project also developed a novel multidimensional method for constitution identification tailored to the life characteristics of the Chinese population, and offered technical support for prevention and control of diseases and chronic conditions. It led to the development of a series of digital and intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine constitution identification equipment and products, and created a four-level health monitoring network spanning individuals, communities, hospitals, and the government across 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. Besides, the project established an application model of “disease warning—regulation, prevention and control—dynamic monitoring”, integrated it into health insurance, and made it reach grassroots levels, which helps to provide Chinese wisdom and solutions for chronic disease prevention and control.

The State Science and Technology Awards in 2023 marked the first presentation of these awards since 2020, with five projects from the field of traditional Chinese medicine receiving the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award in 2023.
