From August 5 to 6, the 15th Annual Academic Meeting of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Basic Theory Branch, China Association of Chinese Medicine(CACM) and International Academic Conference on “Innovative Research on Etiology and Pathogenesis Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the New Era” was held in Hangzhou. It was organized by CACM and hosted by the TCM Basic Theory Branch, ZCMU and Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The conference was held through online live streaming and offline meetings, with three sub-venues and nearly 5,000 participants.

Prof. Wang Qi, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and National TCM Master; Chen Chunlei, deputy secretary of the Education Working Committee of Zhejiang Provincial Party Committee; Cao Qifeng, deputy director of the Health Commission of Zhejiang and deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Sun Yongzhang, deputy secretary-general of CACM; Huang Wenxiu, secretary of the Party Committee of ZCMU; Chen Zhong, president of ZCMU; Zhang Guangji, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of ZCMU; and Wu Chengliang, vice president of ZCMU attended the conference. Nearly 30 experts and scholars from colleges and universities of Chinese medicine, hospitals, research institutes and other units also attended the conference.

In his speech, Huang Wenxiu introduced the development of ZCMU and the construction of ZCMU into a first-class Chinese medical university. Huang Wenxiu pointed out that ZCMU has always attached great importance to the R&D of TCM fundamental theories, and would take this conference as an opportunity to cooperate with other colleges and universities to promote academic inheritance and innovation of TCM basic theories based on inheriting the essence of TCM traditional theories, and make more outstanding contributions to the revitalization and high-quality development of TCM.

 Cao Qifeng expressed his hopes that ZCMU would make full use of its advantages, take the construction of academic organizations such as the TCM Basic Theory Branch as an essential part of building a first-class Chinese medical university, give full play to the leading role of CACM, assemble TCM talents nationwide, strengthen academic exchanges and collaborative research targeting national strategic needs and major scientific issues of TCM, continuously improve the ability to use modern science and technology to interpret TCM principles. In this way, ZCMU can contribute its wisdom and strength to the inheritance and innovation of TCM.

Sun Yongzhang pointed out in his speech that TCM basic theory is an important foundation for the development and inheritance of TCM and the spread of TCM culture. It plays an important role in guiding TCM clinical practice and improving the ability of TCM to prevent and treat diseases. Sun Yongzhang also noted that it is necessary to understand the direction and fundamental requirements for the preservation and innovative development of TCM deeply, make full use of the advantages of the TCM Basic Theory Branch, put emphasis on talent training and enhance the capability of serving the community. It is also vital to upgrade the Health Project of Preventive Treatment of Diseases, promote healthy work mode and lifestyle reflecting the TCM concept of the preventive treatment of diseases and strive to build a distinctive TCM Basic Theory Branch.

It is reported that Prof. Zhang Guangji of ZCMU was elected as the director of the TCM Basic Theory Branch of CAMA at the general election meeting held on August 5.

Prof. Zhang said that the new TCM Basic Theory Branch Committee would continue to unite all members, and carry out in-depth academic research and exchanges. The committee will play a leading role in making breakthroughs in the research on TCM basic theories, developing it to the forefront of the world, and integrating it with clinical research. In addition, it will further strengthen communication, enhance cooperation to innovate modern TCM basic theory, and lead the development of TCM academics, thus creating a new chapter in the development of the discipline of TCM basic theory.

The conference includes invited lectures, expert presentations, etc. Prof. Wang Qi pointed out in his invited report entitled “The Reconstruction and Development of the Basic Theory of TCM” that theory is the source of major scientific discoveries, the engine that leads to the future and it can help explain principles. Through a large amount of theoretical and empirical data, Wang Qi revealed the problems in TCM theory research, profoundly interpreted the core issues of why and how TCM theory should be reconstructed, and put forward some suggestions about how to study and develop TCM theory in the future.
